CONGRATULATIONS TO WINSTON MOXAM ON AWARD

Dec 3, 2010

Congratulations to Winston Moxam and Ernesto Griffith on receiving the 2010 Human Rights Commitment Award of Manitoba for their feature film Billy!

On November 30 the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties, the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the Manitoba Human Rights Commission announced the recipients of this year’s Human Rights Awards.

Winston Moxam (director, co-writer, co-producer) and Ernesto Griffith (actor, co-writer, co-producer) received the award for their film, Billy, a sensitive portrait of one man’s search for acceptance in the earliest days of Manitoba history. Filmed in remote locations in Southern Manitoba towns, Billy is a gripping feature length drama based on the true life story of Billy Beale (Griffith), a lone African-American photographer who moved to Northern Manitoba in 1907.

Billy was awarded the WFG’s Production Fund in Fall 2007.

Also honoured was the Manitoba Theatre for Young People for the achievement of promoting human rights and social transformation for almost 30 years.

A reception honouring the recipients will be held on Tuesday December 7, 2010 in the Manitoba Legislative Dining Room between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
