Russia’s official submission to the 2021 Academy Awards® for Best International Film. Dear Comrades! is based on a true story that happened on June 1st and 2nd, 1962 in the city of Novocherkassk and was kept secret until the ’90s. When the communist government raises food prices at a local factory the workers revolt and storm the government only to face armed soldiers. As the crisis develops, workers are cut down in a massacre and the truth of what happened is covered up by the KGB and soviet propaganda machine. A party official named Lyudmila searches desperately for her daughter in three terrifying days, worried she has been killed. Beautifully photographed, this riveting story reveals the suspicions and cover ups of the Khrushchev era Soviet Union. From Andrei Konchalovsky (Runaway TrainParadise, and co-writer of Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev).

Reviews

Stunning... perversely beautiful and coldly furious... epic in scope.
– Jessica Kiang, Variety
A masterpiece...Catch it if you can. Beautiful and damning, Dear Comrades! is also an act of remembrance.
– Anthony Lane, The New Yorker
