From the Surrealist film exercises of the 1920s to videopoetry in the 80s and 90s, to filmed performance and animation today, filmpoems are an interplay between text, image, and sound.
This three-workshop series will serve as an introduction to the genre; a tutorial on basic editing techniques; and a chance to create original filmpoems using a DIY, guerilla approach to filming, and original poems.
• Number of participants: 12 (maximum)
• Equipment required: laptop, good WIFI connection (for Zoom sessions); access to a camera phone or digital camera. One of the sessions will be a tutorial on editing software. We will let participants know which software to download/access in advance.
• Suitable for anyone with an interest in exploring the filmpoetry genre and experimenting with their own; poets who have never made a film before, and filmmakers who have never written a poem.
• There will be some tasks set between each workshop to encourage filming in your immediate environment. Please let us know in advance if you have any mobility issues that may make filming outside difficult, and we will adjust the tasks accordingly.
Rachel McCrum is originally from Northern Ireland and lived in Edinburgh, Scotland between 2010 and 2016. She was the first BBC Scotland Poet-in-Residence, Broad of cult spoken word cabaret Rally & Broad, and recipient of a Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship. She has performed and taught poetry and performance in Ireland, Scotland, the UK, Greece, South Africa, Haiti, and Canada. She is now delighted to call Montreal home, where she is the curator of the Atwater Poetry Project, and works full time as a freelance poet, performer, event curator, and arts educator.
Her first collection The First Blast to Awaken Women Degenerate (Stewed Rhubarb Press, 2018) is published in a bilingual edition with Mémoire d’encrier in 2020, as Le premier coup de clairon pour réveiller les femmes immorales. Her practice explores migration, movement and landing; feminism and marginalised voices; filmpoetry; and interrogations of emotional and vocal integrity. She is currently working on a new collaborative show, and on her second book, a collection exploring shame.
