Day 1: This will be a short history of animation and an overview of story writing, storyboarding, traditional animation techniques, animation software & pre-production planning. Participants are encouraged to talk about or pitch their projects, to gain feedback from the instructor and the group. A project assignment tailored to your animation needs will then be given due on week two.
Learning outcomes: Short history of animation, animation basics, and techniques through the presentation.
Day 2: We will critique each completed project assignment, enabling the participant towards completing and distributing there independent animation projects. How to promote your projects online, via social media, and funding options will also be discussed.
Learning outcomes: Skills to become an independent animator, Social media promotion, and funding.

Murray’s creative work spans the disciplines and media of drawing, print, film, audio-art, interactivity, and digital/analog hand-drawn animation. He received a BFA first-class honors degree with a thesis in advanced drawing from the U of M. In 2012, his hand-drawn animation Thought Camera, Reel One: “Circus of Objects” was the official selection for the NSI Online Short Film Festival and the 2013 Gimli Film Festival Manitoba program.
In 2018 he won a Tangent Animation Award for Best Short Animation / Experimental for his film “10 Years Before Happiness”- a subjective and allegorical autobiography. In 2020, he received funding from the Manitoba Arts Council to produce a series of experimental animations called “Another Malfunction”. It was also a four-part, half-hour LIVE streaming of original animation that appeared online as a part of the Safe at Home Manitoba initiative in February and March of 2021.

The Winnipeg Film Group reserves the right to cancel any course where the minimum registration has not been met. Anyone registered for a course that has been cancelled is eligible for a full refund, Cancelled course fees may also be used towards any other Winnipeg Film Group training programs.
