Powered by fantastic performances similar to Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s film Mustang of a few years back Rocks focuses on the friendship of a group of young black 15-year-old girls from Hackney growing up in London’s East End. Centered on the lead Bukky Bakray who plays Rocks and her younger brother Emmanuel the film explores their day to day lives and struggles to survive after their large absent mother takes off one day. “From food fights to real fights to jubilant moments such as the girls dancing around on a roof top belting Tina Turner at the top of their lungs Rocks whips up a heartfelt refreshing coming of age tale.” – Abi Ahearne, View of the Arts
