Rocks

Available to rent Nov 20 - Dec 23
Directed by Sarah Gavron
2019, UK, 93 min

This title is available to rent via Cinematheque at Home. This is not only an opportunity for our patrons to see new cinema, but is an important way that they can continue to support independent film during this pandemic with 50% of all sales supporting our theatre.

Powered by fantastic performances similar to Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s film Mustang of a few years back Rocks focuses on the friendship of a group of young black 15-year-old girls from Hackney growing up in London’s East End. Centered on the lead Bukky Bakray who plays Rocks and her younger brother Emmanuel the film explores their day to day lives and struggles to survive after their large absent mother takes off one day. “From food fights to real fights to jubilant moments such as the girls dancing around on a roof top belting Tina Turner at the top of their lungs Rocks whips up a heartfelt refreshing coming of age tale.” – Abi Ahearne, View of the Arts

Reviews

Five Stars. With its energy, its creativity, its raw passion and its fun, this film and its newcomer cast are the best thing I’ve seen at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival.
- Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
A wonderful mixture of joyous and uplifting moments of friendship, womanhood, and teenage life, yet always embracing the  humanity... Rocks is a truly stunning piece of British cinema.
-Scott Davis, The People's Movies
There’s a crackling, raucous energy to Sarah Gavron’s dynamic TIFF Platform opener, Rocks. It’s an energy that brilliantly conveys the jostling of still-forming personalities in a group of teenage girls. A deft balance of drama, humour and hormonal adolescent huffs, Rocks is a real treat: full of warmth, honesty and authenticity.
