WUFF: At First I Was Afraid

Fri, May 31 / 10 pm

Set out to navigate formidable terrain: unfamiliar mental states, new experience, putting yourself out there. Your feelings are waves in the ocean; they come and go, rise and fall. The fear you feel at first will subside, will make way for a great range of emotion. Vulnerability, disorder and loss will make their acquaintance, but so will humour, love and joy. 4 ambitious, messy videos from Canada and the United States seek to reconcile with the inner monologue. It’s okay to laugh, cry, scream. You were an amazement from the day you were born.

Mind Unseen dir. Heidi Phillips
2018 | CA | 16 | video
Drawing a parallel between bi-polar illness and creativity Mind Unseen explores the different angles of this notion. Showing footage of varying stages from manic episodes to depths of depression the viewer is brought into the mind of a person with bi-polar. -HP

Walked In dir. K$K
2019 | US | 10 | video | World premiere
I walked into selling drugs the same way I’ve approached everything in my life: At first, I can be afraid, but in the end I always do it big. This is the story of a Millennial bad bitch. An insight into an all-women takeover of the TRAP. An homage to gangster movies and Bankroll Fresh! -K$K

Goodbye Thelma, dir. Jessica Bardsley
2019 | US | 14 | video | MB premiere
Goodbye Thelma synthesizes footage from the 1991 film Thelma & Louise and footage of the author’s own making to create a mysterious, and at times disturbing, auto-fictional exploration of the joys and terrors of traveling as a woman alone. -JB
