WUFF: Something About Taste

Sat, June 1 / 8:30 pm

Truth as held to be self-evident, however inconsequential or ludicrously subjective. A collection of 9 short films and videos investigating matters of subjectivity, standards, classification, art and consumer desire. Oh god, that dress? Those shoes? This font? That movie was a revelation; it destroyed me. A program about taste, haunted by the spectres of the un-selected. Taste classifies, and it classifies the classifier.WUFF is not immune.

The Comic Sans Video dir. Roger Beebe
2018 | US | 8 | video | Canadian premiere
The Comic Sans Video is a “desktop cinema” essay on the ways in which taste is determined by race, class, gender. Provoked by the Twitter response to the Eric Garner “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirt design, the video draws in equal parts on the theoretical writings of Pierre Bourdieu and conversations with two colleagues and my mother to reflect on both the public discourse and my own aesthetic prejudices. -RB

Rating Dogs on a Scale of 1 to 10 dir. Mark Toscano
2012 | US | 2.5 | 16mm | Manitoba premiere
Truth as held to be self-evident, however inconsequential or ludicrously subjective. Truth as not a matter of opinion. A meaningless game of arbitrary pronouncements that hopes to suggest other contexts in which similar games are far more insidious, while still giving viewers a good time. Ultimately though, a film that is probably too delightful to be anything but cute. -MT

Evangelia C’est Moi dir. Alison Folland
2017 | US/Greece | 11 | 16mm on video | International premiere
An essay on the joys and heartaches of largesse. A real life Madame Bovary reflects on her past excesses from a kitchen in austerity-era Greece. -AF

My Fuzzy Valentine dir. Ben Edelberg
2018 | CA | 5 | 16mm on video | MB premiere
Put the Playboy centrefold in the hands of a Dyke and she will make her into a monster. -DE

We share ourselves with you dir. Max Wildenhaus
2019 | US | 8 | 16mm on video | World premiere
We tell our stories to anyone who will listen. -MW

Gone Sale dir. Matt Meindl
2018 | US | 5 | Super 8mm on video | MB premiere
Faceless forms inhabit the shadow-sprayed remnants of an electronic shopping mall board game. Slumber party capitalism, now a bargain bin of lost dreams. -MM

Sometimes It’s Hard dir. hannah_g
2017 | CA | 3 | video
There are challenges one faces as a New Canadian. -HG

Winners Bitch dir. Sam Gurry
2018 | US | 7 | video | MB premiere
Inspired by a found archive on a doyenne of the dog competition world, Winners Bitch is a visually kinetic and wickedly astute rumination on the many sacrifices it can take to be a woman of distinction. -SG

Degrees Of Limitation (After Stark) dir. Jack Hietpas
2019 | US | 3 | 16mm | World premiere
A remake of Scott Stark’s 1982 film, Degrees Of Limitation. Through an inverse action, I gain what he lost. -JH “With the 16mm Bolex camera mounted on a tripod, I wound the motor a single crank and [ate as much of a hot dog] as I could before the camera stopped (about 1 second). Then I wound it 2 cranks and did the same [with another hot dog], then repeated the process adding one crank each time. With these self-imposed limitations, would I [eat a whole hot dog] before the film ran out?” -Scott Stark
