Sonya Ballantyne’s recent short documentary, Nosisim, will be screened next week as part of the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival (VIWIFF)!
The festival, organized by Women in Film and Television Vancouver, takes place March 6-11 at VIFF Vancity Theatre to coincide with International Women’s Day (March 8).
Sonya’s film reflects on the life of her late Cree grandmother through a drawing by Daphne Odjig entitled “Virginia and Gladys.” This portrait of Sonya’s grandmother and mother was created shortly after their forced displacement from home due to a human-made hydroelectric dam.
Exploring the connections between women (between grandmother and granddaughter and between artist and subject), this film is a perfect fit for International Women’s Day and it can be viewed for free on March 8 as part of VIWIFF’s Indigenous Voices program.
Congratulations Sonya!!!
