Analog Film and the Body: Workshop with Nazli Dincel

WNDX is lucky to have radical filmmaker Nazlı Dinçel join us at our 2019 show, not only to share and discuss her work, but to lead this hands-on workshop. In Analog Film and the Body, participants will be introduced to many of the film manipulation techniques found in Dinçel’s work, and the tools utilized in her practice.

Nazli Dinçels films engage themes of disruption, arousal, immigration, trauma, and the body. Participants will learn how to manipulate the physical surface, color, and texture of both found footage and clear 16mm film strips with direct hands-on techniques and in a supportive and collaborative environment be given time to create on their own. A variety of techniques and tools will be employed, from scratching or typing directly into the film emulsion to punching holes and even sewing through the film, in addition to adding color with inks and marker. This type of cameraless filmmaking (or direct animation) is a meditative process for filmmaker Dinçel in which the analog film becomes a sort of metaphor for the body. Participants are encouraged to come ready to experiment

There is room for 22 participants and half of the spots will be reserved for BIPOC (black, Indigenous, People of Colour) identified folks. If there are more that 22 interested individuals we will make a waitlist. Registration for this event can be made online through the WFG at [LINK], and is $20 per participant. If the cost represents a barrier to your participation, please let us know by emailing with the subject line Subsidized WNDX Workshop. No further explanation is needed because we want those interested to be able to participate regardless of financial circumstances or the burden of proof.
