The Winnipeg Film Group is pleased to announce the appointment of Ivan Hughes as Production Centre Director, effective May 21, 2012. Reporting to Executive Director Cecilia Araneda, Hughes will take on some of the functions previously undertaken by Araneda for the Production Centre, related to artistic and business development for this department, as well as manage its staff.
The Winnipeg Film Group?s Production Centre has served as a resource for Manitoba filmmakers and video artists for 38 years, providing access to affordable training, mentorship, production funding, experimentation opportunities, and production and post production equipment and facilities.
In his new role, Hughes will oversee the centre?s transition to responding to the needs of the new evolution of filmmaking, focused on digital media and platforms, while ensuring artists working in celluloid practices continue to be supported.
Hughes will additionally oversee the Production Centre staff team, which includes Membership Services Coordinator Arlea Ashcroft, Training and Community Programs Coordinator Darcy Fehr, and Equipment and Rentals Supervisor Josh Marr. The Production Centre team works in the Winnipeg Film Group?s 3rd floor facility.
About Ivan Hughes
Ivan Hughes is a Winnipeg-based filmmaker specializing in documentary and short film. He made his directorial debut with the award-winning documentary ?In the Shadow of the Chief,? which was broadcast nationally on CBC and PBS, and which won the People?s Choice Award for Best Film at the Whistler Film Festival. This was followed by the documentary ?Back to the Wall,? the story of a quadriplegic climber and his journey back from spinal injury to the top of a rock face in Squamish, BC. His next film, ?University Wall,? explores the culture of climbing buildings.
After completing filming work in Nepal and Tibet, Ivan moved to Winnipeg from BC, and began work as director and editor on his most recent documentary, ?Soul of the Sea,? which just had its world premiere at Mountainfilm in Telluride. This film follows the progress of a kayaker as she attempts to become the first to paddle solo around a sub-Antarctic island?among ferocious winds and an abundance of incredible wildlife.
Ivan is committed to helping others develop their skills as filmmakers. He has taught editing and documentary workshops, mentored young filmmakers, volunteered on student film shoots and has experience producing and programming film festivals. He has a passion for capturing people?s stories and creating visually compelling films.
